KONTCH's E&E | Choosing beans

How to choose quality coffee beans.

The label tells you more than the price. Look for origin, roast date, how the coffee was grown and who stands behind it.

01

Traceable origin

Quality coffee names its farm or region, not just a country. Ours names the farm, the family and the harvest, because we grow it ourselves in Cameroon.

02

A recent roast date

Look for a roast date, not only a best-before date. Coffee is at its best from a few days to about six weeks after roasting.

03

Ripe cherries and careful drying

Only fully ripe cherries give sweetness. We hand-pick at full maturity and dry on raised beds, so the beans stay clean and even.

04

Arabica, Robusta or both

Arabica brings aroma and natural sweetness, Robusta brings body and crema. A good roaster tells you which you are buying and why.

Questions

Are more expensive beans always better?
Not always. Price often reflects branding and trading margins. Traceability, freshness and how the coffee was grown say more about the cup.
Is Robusta lower quality than Arabica?
No. Well-grown Robusta has depth and crema that Arabica lacks. We grow both and use each on purpose.
